Praying for Our Government

Brothers and sisters, we need to obey God’s commands to pray for our government. He tells us, in 1 Timothy 2:1-2:

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;  2  For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

These are perilous times. As I write this, the world is waiting to see what happens when the US stock market opens. The Federal Reserve is meeting today as well. More than ever, the government needs to be prayed for.

God gave this command when the “kings and all that are in authority” did not even profess to believe in God. Yet God commanded to pray for them, and to give thanks for them. Really? Must I thank God for President Obama? Must I thank God for other leaders who have horrible plans and desires for our nation?  Yes, indeed. He commands it.

Brothers and sisters, rather than writing to your Congressman, get in touch with God. He turns the king’s heart as a river of water (Prov. 21:1). Let us pray that God will enable us to lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty.

And let us examine our own hearts, to see that we are right with God.
